Yes, I have spent the better part of my first day in San Diego at a mall. But guess what - it's outdoors! Called Horton plaza, it's in the downtown area and near the Gaslamp district (I think). It's outdoors and is all done in Southwest/pastel colors, and all these crazy ramps and fountains and levels. Did I mention it's all outdoors? Pretty nifty!
Pretty cool, eh? I also found this Forever 21-style store called "CLOSET", and bought a pretty fantastic outfit for the race track and Vegas. There will be many photos with hats to come.
Interesting thing about retail and restaurants here that I haven't noticed in the Northeast: the use of biblical passages on packaging. I know "In-N-Out Burger" does it, and my CLOSET bag has "John 3:16" on it. I wonder what that passage has to do with a store predominantly filled with hoochie-mama clothes and cheap accessories...

Lunch at the Cage: Photos
Yes, I did the robot at lunch. And it was glorious.
Here are a few photos - not of the robot, unfortunately, but they are almost as amazing.
This is a California Carne Asada burrito - it has steak and FRIES. That's a fry, where Thad is pointing. Megan Goloboy and Cecile Oreste, are you listening?
Steak and Shrimp plate with corn tacos and diet coke (because the diet coke makes a real difference with this meal, yeah...)
Come 'ere burrito, I'm gonna EAT you!!!

BOS > SAN (aka The Flight!)
This was written during the flight, but for obvious internet connectivity reasons and the fact that my computer is just now finally charging again, here it is...
*****
Here are a few pictures from my flight! Beautiful for quite some time – looped around Boston Harbor then headed out over Massachusetts, looking down on the Berkshires. Then over southern New York - we saw the Finger Lakes! I had no idea how large they are. Then the cloud cover set in, it was hard to see much of the ground anymore. So many levels of clouds – we were flying through some wispy clouds so there was a period of bumps, but you could still see one level of high flying clouds, and another level closer to the ground that were lots of little bumps, of a rose color.
Unfortunately my TV stopped working less than halfway through the flight – while I had stopped it on Bravo, there was only so much real housewives I could take! (Hard to believe, I know.) Switched seats to attempt to get a working TV, but that one wasn't changing channels either. I gave up and switched to Mad Men and some WSRP work.
Next a storm! I had seen a tornado warning and other storm warnings for Missouri when watching the Weather Channel, and hoped that we would avoid them – not so much! About a half hour of rough going through dark clouds. Thank gosh for Mad Men Season 3, “My Old Kentucky Home” – the episode always puts me in a good mood! Now we’re out of the storm, but it’s still quite dark and lightning to our right (North). We’re flying a bit higher than I had expected, over 38,000 feet, but I’m guessing that’s because of the storm. (Yes, I am a nervous nerd who has tracked this flight for two weeks prior to taking it, don’t mess.)
The lightning is actually a pretty amazing thing to see. Mostly flashes in clouds far away, but you can make out an occasional line of electricity. Made even more interesting now that I can see a city below the lightning clouds. From looking at the LiveMap I’m guessing its Tulsa or something nearby.
Now for Mad Med episode “Seven Twenty Three,” which I found out from obsessively watching “Inside Mad Men” snippets for the whole third season, is done in the style of film noir. Definitely one of my faves.
Still lots of lightning to the north – I will be extremely happy when we see more ground and fewer clouds! Over Oklahoma now, probably going over the northern boxy part of Texas, then New Mexico, then Arizona, and then to California! I’ve decided that I will feel much better when it gets to be midnight Eastern Time. That means that we’ll have less than an hour to go, and be about the length of my typical flight between BOS and BWI! From what I’ve seen of recent routes, the initial descent starts around 40 minutes before landing.
There is a sprawling metropolis to our north now (well, actually I have no idea how big it is, because my sense of scale up here is way off, but it seems pretty big!). The LiveMap of the kid in front of me I keep checking is going in and out – I’d like to get a better idea of where we are, from the close-up map view. Oh – it might be Wichita, Kansas! Look at that! Pretty cool.
Back to work and Mad Men – in about two hours we should be quite close to San Diego! So excited!
******
The rest of the flight was fine - couldn't see much over New Mexico and Arizona. I was hoping the flight was actually on time so it would still be light out going over the desert, but oh well. Landing in San Diego was cool - cloudy up until just a few minutes before touchdown, but then bam! You come out of the clouds and see the city around you. The airport is also super close to the downtown area, which with Logan, BWI, and other airports I frequent is not the case.
I also found out, upon landing via my Twitter feed, that a cross-country flight from IAD (Dulles, near DC) to LAX hit major turbulence over the Midwest and that 30 people were injured. Must have been close to the storm we went through, or the lightning we were seeing to the North - crazy stuff! I'm glad it didn't happen to us!
And my fear of flying gets better with every flight - that wasn't so bad, and here I am! :D
Lunch at the Cage
Today I met Liz for lunch and we went to a little hole-in-the-wall Mexican place that we at the firm affectionately call "The Cage".
While we were seated and eating, and mid-conversation, she did the robot.
That is all.

Scissors.
Who is SUPER excited that she remembered to remove her expensive titanium scissors from her suitcase (leftover from the Tribe show this past weekend) before trying to fly cross-country? THIS GIRL! That would have been such a waste - and cause for some security questioning.
So I quite literally cannot believe that I am leaving for such a long time. Saying "see you in two weeks!" to my roomie tonight (hi Nirsh!) made it feel a lot more real. Oh, see you in almost August, when I might have a new job and will have traveled 7000 miles and slept outside and seen parts of the country that many people never see in their lifetime. CRAZY!
I keep thinking about the amazing, non-East Coast Mexican food I will be eating tomorrow night, and walking around in weather that is not 80% humidity and over 80 degrees. Thad and I have been talking about this trip for a very long time - and it's finally here!
Also, packing for both Vegas and the campsite in the same trip is pretty fun. In my suitcase, I have the following (just a sampling):
sweatpants
running sneakers
strapless, pocketed, little black dress
bling
gladiator wedges
bugspray (not really, but I should!)
Packed as I can be I suppose... now just a quick and crazy day at work, then it's off to Logan!

The Route.. and Flying, gaahhh
Hooray for the route! And hooray for staying in a 4-star hotel after three nights sleeping outside. It's a must. Here's a link to the rough route: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112133968852448124083.00048bb625ea6b4b41f9a&z=5. It's not exact, but gives the overall idea of where we're going. I'll update it as we go along!
I am also starting to mentally prepare for the flight. During college I flew all the time and absolutely loved it! But after a few years and a few bad flights my fear of flying has grown. I'm not as afraid of what could happen (which, statistically, is virtually nothing) but rather how I would react to it. I deal with fears by learning as much as I can about something, so I know all sorts of specs about the plane and our potential route(s) to San Diego. I also love watching planes, and, as Thad can attest, try to guess the airline of every plane I see in the sky. Well, not the ones wicked far high up, but those taking off from Logan. For example...
Liz: Ahhhh JetBlue! No no, US Airways! Wait wait, Lufthansa!!
Thad: You have no idea what airline that plane is from. You can't see anything but the bottom of the plane.
Liz: Ahhh it's JetBlue! They have blue bottoms!
Thad: :|
Crazy, I know. But it helps me get through the experience! That and hours.. and HOURS of Bravo (aka TV crack for women) on JetBlue's DirectTV.
The next post may involve packing... stay tuned...

Our Route
Tonight, Liz and I mapped out our route.
On Saturday, July 24, we will drive up the coast from San Diego to Newport Beach, then cut up inland and over to Las Vegas, for two nights there at the Mirage. We'll be seeing Love, the Cirque show set to Beatles music, on Sunday night.
Monday will be our longest day of driving, as we traverse Utah, through Salt Lake City, all the way up to a campground in Island Park, Idaho, just outside of Yellowstone National Park.
On Tuesday, we will spend most of the day exploring Yellowstone, then continue east to Sheridan, WY, where we again will camp.
Wednesday takes us into South Dakota and a stop at Mount Rushmore, then further east all the way to Luverne, Minnesota for a third straight camping night.
On Thursday, we finally reconnect with civilization as we make our way into Chicago and sleep in a (presumably) nice bed at the Hyatt.
Friday brings us through Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and up into New York almost to Canada, as we'll be staying at a campground just a few miles from Niagara Falls. How romantic!
And on Saturday, July 31, we complete the journey by driving the final 480 miles east to Boston. What a trip this will be!
